Samsara Drinks Cabinet

£1,750.00

This is a Japanese inspired drinks cabinet with a body and doors made from black walnut, standing on long flared oak legs. Its curved tambour doors open in to an oak-lined interior with adjustable shelving for glassware and bottles,

When closed, the cabinet’s tambours form a seamless marquetry tondo of a cherry blossom tree with the petals rendered in sapele against an oak background. Inside, there is a single cherry blossom branch inlaid on the back oak panel with walnut and dyed red sycamore veneer, accompanied by a sapele hummingbird marquetry motif.

I wanted to create a piece that hid a meaning in its marquetry as well as challenging my skills to do the marquetry on the tambour doors themselves. The name "Samsara" is derived from a Sanskrit word that is used in religions such as Buddhism and Hinduism to represent the cyclical nature of life and death. I wanted the legs of the cabinet to look like they were growing out of the ground with the front right leg flowing into the oak swirl marquetry on the door as if bringing life from the earth to the cherry blossom. There is then the inverse swirl of walnut burr that leads life to the afterlife above.

The walnut used is premium grade, kilned dried American Black Walnut. The legs are prime grade, kiln dried, European Oak and the internals are local kiln dried Oak. These materials provide stability and contrast. The marquetry is made with veneers of oak, walnut. sepele, dyed sycamore and fiddleback sycamore which provide the range of colours to create the designs. It is finished with Raw Osmo Polyx Oil which is high quality , clear, natural oil and hard wax combination that is stain-resistant, water-repellent and abrasion-resistant.

This is a one off piece made during my time at The Chippendale International School of Furniture. Email wolfandwoodsman@gmail.com if you wish to commission something similar.
